Give Up The Ghost (2009) by Brandi Carlile

It’s been a while since I’ve given a 5-star rating to two consecutive albums from the same artist/band, but Brandi Carlile has made it impossible for me to rate this any less than a 5. I really enjoyed her previous album The Story, but Give Up the Ghost points out all of its faults. In hindsight, Story was far too overproduced and it seemed that Carlile was almost forced to emphasize the cracks in her voice to be heard over it. The barest song on The Story, “Josephine,” cannot compare to Ghost‘s “That Year” in raw emotions.

Carlile hasn’t changed her lyrical material – they’re still strongly introspective and heavy – but her treatment has done a 180. “Dreams” is the most upbeat pop-like song I’ve ever heard from her; Carlile even allows her voice to soften instead of forcing it for each song. Another point of interest, The Story had no collaborations with outside artists while Ghosts did. Yet, even when she is joined in a duet with Elton John in “Caroline,” he sounds more like a backup singer instead of a prominent presence. Overall, this is a cohesive album that allows for a lot more creativity without completely changing what makes Carlile so attractive as an artist.

This Is Somewhere (2007) by Grace Potter and the Nocturnals

This is Somewhere

2007, Hollywood Records
country, rock
4

On first listen, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals come off as yet another band in the wave of modern country bands that have a female lead vocalist and plenty of fake twang (as in, ‘faker-sounding-than-most’) and wannabe-tough attitude. But what really stands out about this band, and lead singer Grace Potter herself, are the quieter moments in This is Somewhere that hint at a pop flavor.

This is Somewhere is the band’s third album and second major-label record, which is obvious in the slickly-produced songs obviously geared to a pop-country audience. But there are some sexier rock elements in “Ah Mary” and “Big White Gate” that will rivet you to this album. It’s been a while since we’ve had strong, gritty female voices in rock and Potter fills that void with a voice that will never be renowned for its octaves but will be remembered for its honesty. And when that honesty comes out in full force in “Falling or Flying,” we listeners are left with a singer and her ballad, which is precisely where Grace Potter and the Nocturnals really shine.

Sampler: Is it spring yet?

Since the demise of Muxtape, I’ve been wanting to do a ‘sampler’ feature, which is essentially a bunch of songs that fit a theme but aren’t necessarily coordinated perfectly. Thanks to the new favtape.com (long may it last), I have another shot at it. I’d say this feature is pretty self-explanatory, but you can find it in the tab box on the upper left of the homepage if you want to access it again later on.

As a side note, there’s only one song on this list that I couldn’t find streaming in its entirety online, so I guess you’ll have to deal with it. For the songs that are (strangely) not playing on favtape.com, you can find the links to them on last.fm on the list below. So here we go folks, a sampler for the dregs of winter (photo courtesy of veer.com). Enjoy, and let me know what you think!
