Sing the Sorrow (2003) by AFI

AFI
Sing the Sorrow
2003, DreamWorks
alt rock, post-hardcore

I know there are going to be some hardcore AFI fans out there that’ll trash me for saying this, but I liked this album. I mean, in comparison to decemberunderground, you have to admit Sing the Sorrow at least retained the punk roots that garnered AFI’s cult following over the years. Lyrically, the songs on this album are suitably pompous, cryptic, and well on their way to being campy. But the surprises come in the arrangements of the songs, which are far more minimal than AFI’s previous work and consequently more inviting. This album might have changed AFI’s current fanbase drastically by adding more alternative rock listeners, but in some ways it is the final note in AFI’s old sound and the perfect beginning for what came in decemberunderground.
