Everything is Everything

2009, TeknoStan Records

I’ll admit that I’m a hesitant electronica listener, at best – I fancy guitars and pianos way too much to give them up. But there are times where an electronica album will come out of no where and basically hit me upside the head, which is what I experienced with Autorotation’s Everything is Everything. I don’t claim to completely understand the lyrics nor do I completely get the medley of sounds that are melded to form each song. However, there’s a difference between not understanding lyrics and not having them at all, and with each listen it’s obvious that Autorotation falls in the former category. Every song is intricately crafted and the minimal production quality gives it a delicacy that emphasizes lead singer Robyn Sellman’s voice instead of drowning her out. It might take you a few listens to ‘get’ this band too, but knowing the lack of brilliancy in most of this year’s album releases, that would be time well spent.

Beggars (2009) by Thrice

Beggars Thrice

Thrice
Beggars

2009, Vagrant
alt rock, post-hardcore
5

If I were to crown any modern band as Most Surprising With Every Album They Put Out, Thrice would be it. Listening to their earlier albums, one doesn’t expect anything remotely close to brilliance from them. Yeah, they’ve always had a great sound and yeah, their lyrics have always been rife with meaning (unlike most so-called ‘rock’ bands), but I’ve been so disappointed before that it’s hard for me to actually hope for something great anymore. Thrice did that with Vhiessu, then The Alchemy Index, and now with Beggars.

Lyrically, this is the strongest that Thrice has ever been, and that’s really saying a lot considering how lyrically evolved Alchemy Index was. I really urge you to Google the lyrics for the album and just read through them before you listen to the music. It will give you a whole new perspective on the band and on the album. Vocally, lead singer Dustin Kensrue pushes his limits, which is a FIRST – listen to “Wood & Wire” and “At The Last.” As a band, their music is continually evolving, turning more melodic with each record than remaining in the same post-hardcore rut. This is a revelation and a whet to the aural appetite, all at once. I want these guys to be making records for the rest of eternity if we expect pleasant surprises like this one.

Pigeonholed EP (2009) by Lipona

pigeonholed ep by lipona

Lipona
Pigeonholed EP

2009, unsigned (!)
pop-punk, post-grunge
5

It’s official – EPs are killing me this year. There seems to be a trend in making an EP that’s a shorter version of a self-contained, concise full-length. EPs that are preludes or postludes for full-length albums are a thing of the past, and that isn’t any more evident than in Lipona’s Pigeonholed EP.

It’s been a while since I’ve heard good ‘pop-punk,’ but Lipona has managed to exceed that fake genre and create something that’s truer to the spirit of punk. To understand what I mean, you need to read the lyrics of these songs while listening to them. There’s an honesty to them that eclipses anything I’ve heard in a long time – and thankfully, Lipona doesn’t mince the lyrics to fit the chords. If this EP is any indication, we need to prepare ourselves for a whole new wave of punk.
