In an interesting turn of events, Rachael Yamagata's sophomore album is split into two distinctive style and records. The first, Elephants, is similar to her debut Happenstance in that it is filled with dark, moody ballads, while the second, Teeth Sinking Into Heart, has a harder rock sound and a faster tempo. Yamagata's gritty contralto of course shines poignantly in Elephants, but the true surprise is that her voice is actually better suited to the harder Teeth.

Considering that Adele won the Grammys for Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for "Chasing Pavements," reviewing 19 seems almost trite. But this month's theme focuses on the female voice, and I really think Adele fits the bill as one of the most unique female vocalists today.

I'll admit it - I'm a closet American Idol fan, and I was particularly impressed by David Cook last season. After his surprising win, I think it's safe to say that his was one of the most anticipated albums of the year. Unfortunately, what we got was a bland album sung by a great singer, which left me in a lurch.

While this album was my introduction to the band Electric President, Sleep Well is their sophomore effort and quite an impressive one at that. It's always odd describing an album or a group as 'indie pop' since 'pop' is really just a shortened version of 'popular,' but Electric President is like the Moonbabies in that they can only be classified as the indie version of pop.
