My God, I can’t believe it. Somehow, someway, Linkin Park has managed to make a record that isn’t a rehash of Hybrid Theory or Meteora. In fact, I’m not quite sure what this record can be described as, but it’s definitely not those two albums.
One thing that I like about Linkin Park is that they’ve realized what works for them – melody. MtM is melodic and progressive in a way that Meteora attempted to be. In fact, if you remember the song “My December” from Reanimation, then you’ve got a good handle on what most of MtM sounds like. However, that’s not to say that there isn’t some screaming too. Lead singer Chester Bennington can’t make an album without screaming at least once, I think. To be fair, he does sing a lot in this album. So does Mike Shinoda, which is a very nice change of pace.
The lyrics, unfortunately, aren’t very interesting. The honesty and accessibility, which has won them so many fans, is still there though. In spite of it, I really can’t find something that I absolutely hate about this album. I’ve always been more in their melodic songs, and there are plenty here. Overall, a good listen.
