After their first album Civilian prompted comparisons to The Killers, Boy Kill Boy decided that their second album needed to be more ‘honest’ and reflective of their personalities. They certainly succeeded in writing honest songs, but I fear Stars And The Sea will now cause them to be compared to the Strokes instead.

One of the best things about this album is the gradual movement from their over-produced, hook-choked first album. Here, the music actually seems to fit the lyrics with only makes the hooks more likable. Essentially, Boy Kill Boy has officially made the transition from ‘post-punk revival’ to ‘alternative rock.’ It’s certainly not a bad thing, but I wish they’d taken the evolution a step further and dared to make music that isn’t as smoothly produced. The lyrics make up for it however, which makes this an excellent sophomore album.

Music Video: “Promises” by Boy Kill Boy

Boy Kill Boy’s new album Stars and Sea is officially set to be released to the world on March 31st. Lucky for you, I have my review ready a week ahead of schedule.

What I particularly love about this song “Promises” is the line ‘this kind of journey means nothing to me.’

One of the best things about this album is that you don't have to be a huge punk fan to love it. There are so many 80s and pop influences in this album that the only thing that stays 'punk' through everything might be lead singer Chris Peck's gritty voice.

This wide-sweeping appeal makes every song here a crowd pleaser. Even the slower 'Hidden Track' reminds you of Simon and Garfunkel more than shoe-gaze emo crap. While not lyrically brilliant, they are definitely a welcome respite from heavier fare.
