Over the many years that AFI has existed, they have constantly evolved their sound and lyrics. decemberunderground is no different; in this album, AFI continues to be gothic and elaborate, but now they have an electronic edge to their sound. Furthermore, their lyrics have become more accessible, unlike the pomposity of Sing the Sorrow.

It’s debatable whether this change from the rock-edge of Sing the Sorrow is really a problem for the band. The accessible lyrics have also led to lighter arrangements, which means that the melancholy of their former albums are gone. Yet, for every former fan who has defected from the bandwagon, there are now at least five teenage girls willing to take their place. Whether that’s a good or bad change is for you to decide.
